At present, is it possible to know in advance which are the nodes not used in elements, or is it necessary to look at the elements connectivity list?

In MSH4 we currently save some nodes that are generated but not used in elements: this will be fixed in the next bug fix release.

Yes: the algorithms have been reworked a lot, so you should expect a (slightly) different number of elements.
