Hi Courtney,
I would use your approach 1, but make sure that "save all (ignore physical groups)" is checked when saving the mesh.
Remark concerning ElmerGUI: If you don't see volume elements, check Model->Summary. Volume elements can be made visible with View->Volume Mesh.
HTH,
Matthias

Yes, I do see volumes. I have tried the following approaches (and see volumes listed in gmsh in both methods):
1. Simply opening my .step file and meshing 1, 2, and 3D.
2. Creating a volume physical group using the GUI, and then meshing as above
when I attempt to open the .msh file in Elmer, I get 2 different responses:
1. When I open the first file, it opens as usual, but opens with no volume elements
2. When I open the second file, it does not open at all - Elmer says that there are 0 elements in the file.
I appreciate your assistance - any advise is much appreciated!
Regards,
Courtney

Hi,
I have difficulties to open your STEP file, my gmsh hangs when I try it.
What you can check: Are you sure you generated a 3D mesh? When you open your .msh file with gmsh, do you see volumes in Tools->Visibility?
HTH,
Matthias

To Whom it May Concern,
I am attempting to mesh a rather complex geometry representative of a 3/0 AWG copper wire. I have a .step file (attached) for this geometry. When I attempt to mesh this geometry and open it in Elmer (for additional analysis), I noticed that the mesh has " 0 volume elements".
Would you be able to assist with this issue? I'm thinking I may not have the correct options setup for meshing a geometry such as this.
I should point out that I am not very experienced with finite element analysis, as this is my first attempt at using software such as gmsh and elmer.
Thank you for your time!
Regards,
