Dear Dr Geordie,
In Medit (mesh format), hexahedral elements are numbered as follows:
suppose vertices 1,2,3,4 are in plane z=0 and 5,6,7,8 in plane z=1
then vertices 1,2,3,4 form a quadrilateral having a normal oriented
toward plane z=1
and vertex 5 is above vertex 1, 6 above 2, etc..
in other words, vertices are labelled quite "intuitively", as
depiected hereafter
