[Gmsh] STL model: meshing a cuboid volume and defining faces

Hi All,
I would appreciate help with these two questions:
1. For CFD purposes I want to mesh a model (its boundary) plus a surrounding cuboid volume (a box) around it. In the interior of the cuboid and away from the model boundary I want a coarser mesh, that is, larger elements. The model is given as an STL file. How do I do that?. Do I need to define the cuboid in Gmsh?.
2. How can I label different faces of the STL model?. The Gmsh tutorial shows how to define and label `Physical Surfaces' but only with models created with the Gmsh `Geometry' module.
Cheers,
Mike.
