[Gmsh] API with gmsh instance

Dear gmsh,

I would like to know if it's possible to interact with an active gmsh
instance with gmsh's api.
So for example, i would have an instance of gmsh openen (with the gui), and
then do operations on it with the api.
Is this possible, and if yes how?
