[Gmsh] Problem while experimenting with wire extrusion

Dear all,
I'm having a problem with wire extrusion. I have prepared an example to explain this (see attachment).
The script builds an extruded coil by using a spline (like pipe.geo example).
Using default parameters and changing only the number of turns this is what happens:
If you set the number of turns to one or two, the mesh seems ok.
However if you increase the number of turns, for example, to 10 you get a strange behavior at the end of the extrusion (see attached picture) and, when meshing, the following error occurs (see attached full log and mesh picture)
Error   : Self intersecting surface mesh, computing intersections (this could take a while)
Info    : 8 intersecting faces have been saved into 'intersect.pos'
Error   : Could not open file 'intersect.pos'
Warning : Volume 1 consists of no elements
Info    : Done meshing 3D (0.613586 s)
Info    : 1883 vertices 3676 elements
Any help on this is much appreciated,
