[Gmsh] Curved geometries GMSH strategy

Dear GMSH,

I am interested in how GMSH chooses the interpolation points for higher
order elements. In particular, I would be grateful to obtain a
publication or a reference manual which describes the strategy employed
by GMSH.

One of the reasons for asking is because I have tried to mesh a ball
consisting of 32 elements, convert it to VTK using converter which I
wrote myself, and see how it looks like. I have observed that not only
the boundary sides of the elements are curved, as expected, but also
about half of the internal boundaries between elements are
convex/concave, and half are straight sided without any pattern apparent
to me. Can you please explain why is this happening?

Kind regards,
Aleksejs Fomins
