[Gmsh] Relation between surface meshes and extruded tetrahedral meshes

Hi all
I am new to GMSH and to this mailing list. I have used GMSH to extrude an
existing 2-D triangular surface mesh to a 3-D tetrahedral mesh. I was
wondering if there is any relation between the 2-D original mesh and the 3-D
generated mesh. I mean is there any kind of mapping between the two, for
example, is the list of triangles in the 3-D .mesh file newly generated
defining the surface of the 3-D model generated, or are they only to be used
as elements forming the tetrahedrons.
