Answered by own question.
1) read the readme.txt file first!!!
2) on win2000 in control panel: system: advanced: environment variables add
a new user variable GMSH_HOME with where you'd like the options etc files
placed.
sorry to have pestered.
This will no doubt not be my last posting or faux pas
cheers

Subject: [Gmsh] home directory?
Hi & a big thanks for a wonderful bit of software!
I've just started using gmsh on win2000 & although I've searched the archive
I can't find how to force gmsh to use & save the options file .gmsh-options
and the gmsh session file in a directory of my choice?
e.g. I think i need to know how would i set $HOME to say C:\gmsh_dat ?
thanks in advance
mark
p.s. I'm unfamiliar with cygwin of 'nix operation systems
